Introduction to Order of Operations

To solve numerical expressions we follow a particular order called the order of operations. This topic covers this method and its use in real life situations.

Topic: Order of Operations - Expressions

  • The rules for the Order of operations are :

    (a) Perform operations within parentheses.
    (b) Evaluate the Exponents
    (c) Divide and Multiply in order from left to right.
    (d) Add and Subtract in order from left to right

  • If there are any exponents in an expression, they must be evaluated once the parenthesis has been removed

  • The order of removal of parenthesis is given below :

    (a) The circular parenthesis (that is  ( ) ) is removed first
    (b) The curly parenthesis (that is { }) is removed after the circular parenthesis
    (c)  The square or box parenthesis ( that is [ ]) is removed last

  • An easy way to remember the order of operations is given by the these words:

    Please        Parenthesis
    Excuse       Exponents
    My             Multiply
    Dear           Divide
    Aunt           Add
    Sally           Subtract

Topic: Consumer Applications

  • To write the mathematical relation, first try and list down what we need to find out

  • The order in which calculations need to be done determines the order of the operations in the mathematical relation

  • Use the below given order of the operations to solve the mathematical relations:

First, solve the parenthesis present in the expression, if any

    Second ,
solve the exponents or the exponents present in the expression

Third, divide and multiply in order from left to right

Last, add and subtract in order from left to right
