Patterns of Multiplication

In this topic, we learn to multiply whole numbers by multiples of 10. We do this either by using patterns or by counting zeros.

Topic: Multiplication Patterns

  • One way of finding the product is by using patterns

  • Another way to find the product is by counting zeros in the factors

  • In either case, first find the basic fact (multiply without the zeros) and then add the same number of zeros you add to the factors to the end of the product

  • The difference between the two methods is that we are using patterns in the first case (step-by-step addition of zeros), whereas in the second case we simple count all the zeros in the factors and add them after the product
