Multiply Whole Numbers

This topic covers the concept of multiplying whole numbers. We learn to multiply by one-digit, two-digit, and three-digit numbers, and to multiply three factors.

Topic: Multiply by One Digit

  • To multiply by a 1-digit number, first multiply the ones, then the tens, and so on

  • Regroup at each stage, if necessary

  • For example, when finding 396 x 7, using the following steps:
Step 1: Multiply the ones (6). Regroup if necessary
Step 2: Multiply the tens (9). Add any new tens. Regroup if necessary
Step 3: Multiply the hundreds (3). Add any new hundreds. Regroup if necessary
    396 x 7 = 2,772

Topic: Multiply by Two and Three Digits

  • To multiply by two-digits, multiply the ones, followed by the tens; then add

  • Remember to place the zero when multiplying a 2-digit number

  • To multiply by three-digits, multiply the ones, the tens, followed by the hundreds; then add

  • Remember to place two zeros when multiplying by a 3-digit number

Topic: Multiply Three Factors

  • To find the product of three factors, first multiply the first two factors. Then multiply the product of the first two factors by the third factor

  • Remember to place the zero when multiplying a 2-digit number
