Subtract Greater Numbers

This topic covers subtraction of whole numbers and money by regrouping across zeroes. We learn to subtract using the Trade First Subtraction Method and Left-to-Right Subtraction Method.

Topic: Trade First Subtraction Method

  • Two numbers can be subtracted using the Trade First Subtraction Method. The number to be subtracted is the subtrahend and the other number is the minuend

  • Subtract the digits in the ones place. If subtracting these digits gives a negative number, trade 1 ten for 10 ones. If there are no tens to trade, regroup the hundreds first

  • Subtract tens and hundreds the same way. 1 hundred = 10 tens

  • Check the answer by adding the subtrahend and the difference. It should be equal to the minuend

Topic: Left-to-Right Subtraction Method

  • Left to Right Subtraction Method can be used to subtract two numbers

  • Write the subtrahend as Thousands + Hundreds + Tens + Ones. Then start at the left and subtract column by column

  • If the difference is a negative number, regroup. If there is no digit to regroup, regroup the digit in the next place

  • 1 thousand = 10 hundreds; 1 hundred = 10 tens; 1 ten = 10 ones
