This topic covers ratios and rates. Use of tables to find equivalent ratios and rates along with some problem solving applications are also covered in this topic.

Topic: Express as Ratio

  • Quantities with same units can be expressed as a ratio in three different ways:
    a / b or a : b or a to b

  • To write the ratios in simplest form, divide numerator & denominator by their GCF

  • A rate compares quantities and values having different units

  • A unit rate is a ratio in which the denominator is 1
    E.g., 5 / 1

  • To convert a ratio to unit rate, divide the numerator and the denominator by the denominator

  • To compare quantities with different units use Unit Rate

  • A unit rate is a ratio in which the denominator is 1
    E.g., 5 / 1

  • To convert a ratio to unit rate, divide the numerator and the denominator by the denominator

Topic: Equivalent Ratios and Rates

  • Equivalent ratios are ratios that name the same comparison

  • Equivalent ratios can be found by multiplying (scaling up) or dividing (scaling down) both terms of a ratio by the same number

  • To compare quantities with different units use Unit Rate

  • A unit rate is a ratio in which the denominator is 1
    E.g., 5 / 1

  • To convert a ratio to unit rate, divide both numerator and denominator by the denominator
