Scale Drawings, Models, and Maps

The use of ratios in scaling of a figure is covered in this topic. Calculation of actual measurement using the scale factor is also covered.

Topic: Actual Measurement

  • A proportion indicates that the two ratios are equal or equivalent. E.g. if a : b and c : d are in proportion, then
      a = c
      b    d

  • If two ratios are proportional, then their cross products should be equal, that is
    a x d = c x b

  • A Scale gives a ratio that compares the measurements on the drawing or model to the measurements of the real object

  • Ratio of map distance to the actual distance must remain the same that is, the two ratios must be in proportion

Topic: Scale Factor

  • A Scale gives a ratio that compares the measurements on the drawing or model to the measurements of the real object

  • To write a ratio in the simplest form, divide the numerator & the denominator by their GCF
