Concepts of Probability

This topic introduces the concept of probability, in which the student learns to find as well as describe the probability of an event.

Topic: Find Probability

  • Probability is a measure of the likelihood that a given event will occur. It can be expressed as a number greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 1

  • Probability is a measure of the likelihood that a given event will occur. It can be expressed as a number greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 1

  • An event is a set of outcomes to which a probability is assigned

  • A sample space is a list of all possible outcomes

Topic: Describe Probability

  • The probability of an event can be described as: certain, impossible, more likely, less likely, or as likely as not (1/2)

  • An event that is certain has a probability of 1; an event that is impossible has a probability of 0

  • An event that is certain has a probability of 1; an event that is impossible has a probability of 0

  • An event is less likely than a second event if the first event has a smaller probability of happening than the second event

  • Probability of an event = Number of favorable outcomes / Number of possible outcomes
