Solving Fraction Equations

This topic covers the concept of fraction multiplication equations using reciprocals.

Topic: Mixed Number Coefficients

  • A coefficient is the number that is multiplied with a variable in an algebraic term

  • To solve an equation that has a Mixed Number coefficient, we convert the mixed number to an improper fraction as the first step

  • Improper fraction =

(Whole number  x Denominator  + Numerator) / Denominator

  • Then we multiply both the sides by the reciprocal of the improper fraction

Topic: Negative Coefficients

  • To solve a multiplication equation having negative coefficients, get the variable alone on one side of the equation

  • To get the variable alone on one side of the equation, either multiply both sides by the reciprocal of the coefficient of the variable or divide both sides by the coefficient of the variable

  • For example,
    (-9/4) w = (13/4)
Multiply both sides of the equation by -4/9

Topic: Solve Fractional Equations

  • A fractional equation is any equation that has at least one fraction in it.

    For example:

    x + 2 3/7 = 5 4/2 is a fractional equation

  • Express mixed numbers as improper fractions.
Improper fraction = (Whole number × Denominator + Numerator) / Denominator

  • To find the value of the variable: Subtract/Add the number that is added/subtracted from the unknown variable from both the sides (left hand side and right hand side) of the equation

  • Express the answer in the simplest form

Topic: Multiplication Equations

  • To solve an equation, get the variable alone on one side of the equation

  • To get the variable alone on one side of the equation, either multiply both sides by the reciprocal of the coefficient of the variable or divide both sides by the coefficient of the variable

  • To simplify, cancel the common factors.
    For example,
    (3/4) x (2/1) = (3/2) x (1/1)

  • Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. For example,
    (3/4)/(1/2) = (3/4) x (2/1)

  • To write a fraction in the simplest form, cancel the common factors
