Patterns and Multiples of Ten

This topic deals with using multiplication patterns to multiply by 2-digit numbers. It also covers multiplication of multidigit numbers by multiples of 10.

Topic: Multiplication Patterns

  • Product means 'multiplication'. The product of 2 and 3 is simply a way of writing: 2 x 3, where 2 and 3 are the factors and 6 is the product

  • If we add the same number of zeros to one of the factors and to the product, the statement remains true

  • If a zero already exists in the product, we need to keep it in the product as we add zeros

Topic: Partial Products Method

  • To find the product of 2 numbers, break the factors into two parts and then multiply separately

  • To find 32 x 40, divide 32 into 30 and 2 and then multiply both 30 and 2 by 40 and add the products

Topic: Multiplication by Multiples of 10

  • To multiply two digit numbers by a multiple of 10, multiply the number by ones and by the tens

  • To find 34 x 20, find 34 x 0 ones and then 34 x 2 tens. If we add the same number of zeros to one of the factors and to the product, the statement remains true
