Metric Units of Mass

This topic covers the concept of Metric Units of measurements of Mass. We will learn to convert and compare between the various units of mass and also solve real life problems based on the units of weight.

Topic: Appropriate Units of Mass

  • Benchmarks are the measurements that are used to estimate mass of other objects

  • The mass of a very small insect is used as a benchmark for a milligram

  • The mass of a large paper clip is used as a benchmark for a gram

  • The mass of 6 medium sized apples is used as a benchmark for a kilogram

Topic: Conversions and Comparisons of Metric Units of Mass

  • To compare two measurements in different units, convert them measurements into a common unit

  • 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 g = 1000 mg

  • Divide the smaller unit by the conversion factor to convert it to the bigger unit

  • Multiply the bigger unit by the conversion factor to convert it to the smaller unit

  • We can also use the method of proportions to convert a measure in one unit to a measure in another unit. Use the conversion factor as one of the ratios

Topic: Calculate using Conversions

  • 1 kg = 1000 grams and 1 gram = 1000 milligrams

  • To compare the two measurements in different units, convert the two measurements into a common unit

  • To add or subtract the measurements, first convert then into a common unit
