Estimating and Finding Area

This topic covers estimation of the area of irregular figures. Area of rectangles and parallelograms are also covered.

Topic: Area of an Irregular Figure - Estimation

  • The area of a figure is the amount of surface it covers. We measure area in square units

  • To find the area of an irregular figure, use a grid

  • To find the area of the figure, find the number of squares inside the figure

  • Count fully inside and almost fully inside squares as 1 each; about half filled as half each, and ignore the rest. The sum gives us the approximate number of squares

  • Area of the figure = Total number of squares inside the figure x Area of 1 square

Topic: Area of a Rectangle

  • The area of a figure is the amount of surface it covers. We measure the area in square units

  • To find the area of a rectangle, multiply the length by the width
For example: If the length of a rectangle is 12 m and its width is 5 m then:
    Area of the rectangle = Length (12 m) x Width (5 m) = 12 m x 5 m = 60 m2

  • A square is a rectangle with its length equal to its breadth
Area of a square = Side x Side

Topic: Area of a Parallelogram

  • The area of a parallelogram = Base x Perpendicular Height

Topic: Word Problem on Area

  • Area of a rectangle = Length x Width

  • If there are two rectangles of different measurements then:
Area of bigger rectangle - Area of smaller rectangle = Remaining Area

  • For example,
A rectangular park is made up of a rectangular pool and a surrounding picnic ground.
If the area of the rectangular park = 750 yd2 and
The area of the pool = 40 yd2
    Then:
Picnic ground area = Park area - Pool area
                                   = 750 yd2 - 40 yd2
                                   = 710 yd2
