Estimating and Finding Area

The area of a figure is the amount of surface it covers. We measure area in square units

To find the area of an irregular figure, use a grid

To find the area of the figure, find the number of squares inside the figure

Count fully inside and almost fully inside squares as 1 each; about half filled as half each, and ignore the rest. The sum gives us the approximate number of squares

Area of the figure = Total number of squares inside the figure x Area of 1 square

To find the area of a rectangle, multiply the length by the width
For example: If the length of a rectangle is 12 m and its width is 5 m then:
Area of the rectangle = Length (12 m) x Width (5 m) = 12 m x 5 m = 60 m²

A square is a rectangle with its length equal to its breadth
Area of a square = Side x Side

The area of a parallelogram = Base x Perpendicular Height

Area of a rectangle = Length x Width

If there are two rectangles of different measurements then:
Area of bigger rectangle - Area of smaller rectangle = Remaining Area

For example,
A rectangular park is made up of a rectangular pool and a surrounding picnic ground.
If the area of the rectangular park = 750 yd² and
The area of the pool = 40 yd²
Then:
Picnic ground area = Park area - Pool area
                               = 750 yd² - 40 yd²
                               = 710 yd²
