Lines, Line Segments, Rays, and Angles

This topic deals with the concepts of lines, line segments, and rays. This topic also covers the concept of angles and their classification.

Topic: Identify Paths

  • A straight path that goes forever in both directions is a line

  • A straight path with 2 endpoints is a line segment

  • A straight path that goes on forever in one direction from an endpoint is a ray

  • Lines that meet or cross each other at a common point are intersecting lines

  • Lines that never cross or meet and are everywhere the same distance apart are parallel lines

Topic: Identify Angles

  • An angle is formed by 2 rays or 2 line segments that share the same endpoint

  • The endpoint where the rays or line segments meet is called the vertex of the angle. The rays or segments are called the sides of the angle

  • Angles that form a square corner are right angles

  • The rays of an angle less than a right angle form a shape that is narrower than a right angle

  • The rays of an angle greater than a right angle form a shape that is wider than a right angle
