  • A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction

Topic: Rename a Mixed Number

  • A mixed number has a whole-number part and a fraction part. A mixed number is equal to the sum of the whole-number part and the fraction part

  • Steps to follow to write a mixed number (1 6/10) as an improper fraction

    Step 1: Rename whole-number part as fraction with the same denominator as the fraction part

    1 in 6/10 can be written as 10/10

    Step 2: Add the fractions

    10/10 + 6/10 = 16/10
    1 6/10 = 16/10

  • An improper fraction has a numerator that is greater than or equal to the denominator

  • A fraction in simplest form is a fraction with least numerator and least denominator. For example, simplest form of 8/6 is 4/3

Topic: Compare Mixed Numbers

  • To compare mixed numbers, rename them as the improper fraction, find their equivalent fractions with the same denominator and then compare their numerators

  • For two fractions with the same denominator, larger numerator means greater fraction

  • An improper fraction is the fraction with numerator greater than or equal to the denominator. For example, 7/4 is an improper fraction
