Compare and Order Fractions with Like and Unlike Denominators

In this topic, we learn to compare and order fractions.

Topic: Comparison with 1 and Comparison of Like Fractions

  • A whole number can be said to have the denominator 1

  • Any fraction whose numerator is less than its denominator is less than 1

  • Fractions which have same denominators are known as like fractions

  • To compare fractions that have like denominators, just compare the numerators. The fraction with the larger numerator is larger

Topic: Compare Fractions with Unlike Denominators

  • To compare the fractions, convert them into like fractions (rename them with the same denominator)

  • Fractions which have same denominators are called like fractions; the fractions which have different denominators are called unlike fractions

  • When the numerators of two (or more) fractions are the same, the fraction with the smaller denominator is larger

  • To convert unlike fractions into like fractions, use the LCD

  • When the denominators of two (or more) fractions are the same, the fraction with the larger numerator is larger
