Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

In this topic, we learn to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Topic: Mixed to Improper Fraction

  • Proper fraction: A fraction in which the numerator is less than the denominator. For Example: 2/3

  • Improper fraction: A fraction in which the numerator is equal to or greater than the denominator. For Example: 5/4

  • Mixed Number: A number that has two parts - a whole number part and a proper fraction part. For Example: 5 2/3 is a mixed number in which: 5 is the whole number part and 2/3 is the proper fraction part

  • To convert a Mixed number to an Improper fraction use the following expression:
    Improper fraction = (Whole number x Denominator + Numerator)/Denominator

    It is another way of writing an improper fraction.
    For Example: 5 2/3 is a mixed number in which 5 is the whole number part and 2/3 is the fraction part

  • To convert an Improper fraction into Mixed number do the following steps:

    1) Divide the numerator by the denominator and then find the quotient and the remainder

    2) Mixed number equivalent of the improper fraction =  
    Quotient  Remainder
                   Denominator
