Fractions and Percents

This topic covers the concepts of multiplication of fractions with whole numbers. It also covers finding fractions and percents of whole numbers.

Topic: Find Fractions and Percents

  • To multiply a whole number with a fraction, first divide the whole number by the denominator of the fraction; multiply their product by the numerator

  • 2/3 of a whole number is 2 times 1/3 of the number

  • For example: 8/3 x 9 = (9 ÷ 3) x 8 = (3 x 8) = 24

  • Percent means per hundred, or out of hundred; 1% equals 1/100

Topic: Multiply Using Number Lines and Models

  • Multiplication of a whole number by a fraction can be represented through hops on a number line

  • The whole number tells us how many hops to make, and the fraction tells us the length of the hop

  • Add the fraction as many times as the number of hops taken

  • To add like fractions, add the numerators and retain the denominator

  • To multiply a whole number with a fraction, first multiply the whole number by the numerator of the fraction and divide their product by the denominator
