Estimating Quotients Using Rounding

This topic deals with estimating quotients using rounding. We also use the concept of compatible numbers to estimate quotients.

Topic: Estimate Quotients by Rounding

  • When the problem does not require an exact answer, we use estimation

  • To estimate the quotient, round the dividend to the highest place. For example, to estimate 76 ÷ 4, round 76 to its highest place (tens)

  • Use basic division facts and division patterns to find the quotient

Topic: Estimate Quotients

  • When the problem does not require an exact answer, we use estimation

  • To estimate a quotient, we find compatible numbers. Quotient is the answer to a division problem

  • To estimate the quotient of 348 ÷ 9, use division facts to find a compatible number so that we can solve the problem mentally

  • 270 and 9 are compatible numbers because they are easy to divide mentally. Similarly, 360 and 9 are compatible numbers

  • 270 ÷ 9 = 30 and 360 ÷ 9 = 40. 348 is closer to 360 than 270. So, the better estimate of 348 ÷ 9 is 40
